Christmas is in the air, can't you tell?
Every year I seem to like Christmas a little less (unless I’m in Trinidad, then it’s all good!). Trust me, I’m not as cantankerous as I sound; it’s just that Christmas doesn’t give me the same feeling as it did when I was a child.
I do understand that as a child you don’t have to worry about buying gifts or preparing for the holiday, hence, children are able to enjoy it more. But I feel that somehow throughout the years people have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas.
It has become so commercial that I honestly do not look forward to the holidays. I witness weary shoppers wandering aimlessly in malls trying to find the perfect gift for their family. Don’t get me wrong; I am not against gift giving. I actually enjoy buying gifts for my loved ones, but it’s the expense that many people have to go through that I find saddening. Many people go into debt just so they can buy the most elaborate gifts. That is where I have a problem. I don’t think that you need to break the bank to show someone that you care.
I’ve decided not to exchange gifts with everyone that I know-only close friends and family (actually this year, my sis, bro and I are not exchanging, we are only giving something to our mom). I actually enjoy going out and having a great time with my friends instead of giving them the obligatory Christmas present. Those times mean more to me than a fancy new sweater. I hope that you enjoy the holiday season.
peace and love,
michelle
